About Teena
Breaking Barriers. Building Awareness. Creating Change.
Teena Nessa is a speaker, coach, and advocate dedicated to empowering individuals and educating organizations on the realities of hidden struggles, domestic abuse, and honour-based violence.
Her work is rooted in a unique combination of lived experience, professional expertise, and a deep commitment to awareness, prevention, and transformation.
A Background in Protection & Leadership
Teena made history as Canada’s first female Executive Protection Officer to serve within a political environment, protecting the first female Mayor of Calgary.
Licensed under Alberta’s Security Services and Investigators Act, she specialized in executive protection, undercover operations, and high-risk security environments. Her work was recognized with the Chief Security Officer Award for Outstanding Service and Professionalism.
This experience built a strong foundation in risk awareness, situational assessment, and leadership under pressure, skills that now inform her work today.
From Silence to Strength
Behind her professional success, Teena carried a story few could see.
As a young woman, she experienced abuse, coercive control, and a forced arranged marriage that led to years of silence and isolation. What was presented as cultural expectation was, in reality, a lived experience of harm that often remains misunderstood and unseen.
Today, Teena uses her voice to bring awareness to these hidden realities, particularly honour-based violence and domestic abuse, helping others feel seen, understood, and supported.
From Protection to Prevention
Teena recognized that the same skills used to assess external threats in security environments can also be applied to identifying hidden risks within homes, workplaces, and communities.
Today, through her work with Empower Your Path, she operates at the intersection of:
-
Survivor empowerment
-
Honour-based violence awareness
-
Domestic abuse awareness
-
Workplace education
-
Community and leadership engagement
Through coaching, speaking, and initiatives such as Hidden Struggles in the Workplace, she supports organizations and individuals in recognizing warning signs, increasing awareness, and fostering safer, more responsive environments.
Mission & Impact
Teena’s mission is to empower individuals to reclaim their voice and move beyond survival, while equipping organizations and communities with the awareness and tools needed to support prevention and meaningful change.
Her work contributes to growing conversations around:
-
Awareness and prevention of honour-based violence
-
Workplace education and support systems
-
Survivor-informed perspectives
-
Community and leadership engagement
She welcomes opportunities to collaborate with organizations, community groups, and leaders committed to creating safer, more informed, and more compassionate environments.
