Honour-Based Violence Awareness
Bringing Awareness to What Often Goes Unseen
Honour-based violence is a complex and often misunderstood form of abuse that exists across communities, cultures, and societies. It is frequently hidden behind silence, fear, and deeply rooted expectations, making it difficult to recognize and even harder to address.
Raising awareness is the first step toward prevention. By creating understanding, we can begin to support individuals, strengthen community response, and build safer, more informed environments.

What is Honour-Based Violence?
Honour-based violence (HBV) refers to a range of abusive behaviors used to control an individual’s actions, choices, or identity in the name of protecting or preserving family or community “honour.”

It can take many forms, including

-
Forced or early child marriage
-
Emotional and psychological abuse
-
Coercive control and isolation
-
Threats, intimidation, or physical harm

HBV is often complex and can involve multiple individuals, including family or community members, making it different from other forms of abuse.

It is important to understand that honour-based violence is not about culture or tradition, it is about control, fear, and the restriction of personal freedom.

Why It Often Goes Unseen
Honour-based violence is often hidden in plain sight.

Unlike other forms of abuse, it can be reinforced by family or community expectations, making it more difficult for individuals to speak out or seek help. Fear, shame, and the risk of isolation or retaliation can keep victims silent for years.

Many individuals may not even recognize what they are experiencing as abuse, especially when it is normalized or justified within their environment.

For professionals, organizations, and communities, this can make honour-based violence difficult to identify. The signs are often subtle, misunderstood, or overlooked, leading to missed opportunities for early support and intervention.

Why Awareness Matters
Raising awareness of honour-based violence is essential for prevention, early intervention, and meaningful support.

For organizations, workplaces, and community professionals, understanding the signs and dynamics of HBV can make a critical difference in identifying risk and responding appropriately.

Without awareness, individuals may continue to suffer in silence, while opportunities to provide support and protection are missed.

By increasing understanding, we can begin to create safer environments where individuals feel seen, supported, and empowered to seek help. Awareness also strengthens the ability of leaders, teams, and professionals to respond with sensitivity, clarity, and confidence.
